Hydrogen acts as a therapeutic antioxidant by selectively reducing cytotoxic oxygen radicals

Publication Abstract

Acute oxidative stress induced by ischemia-reperfusion or inflammation causes serious damage to tissues, and persistent oxidative stress is accepted as one of the causes of many common diseases including cancer. We show here that hydrogen (H2) has potential as an antioxidant in preventive and therapeutic applications. H2 selectively reduced the hydroxyl radical, the most cytotoxic of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and effectively protected cells; however, H2 did not react with other ROS, which possess physiological roles. Thus H2 can be used as an effective antioxidant therapy; owing to its ability to rapidly diffuse across membranes, it can reach and react with cytotoxic ROS and thus protect against oxidative damage.

To date there are over 1500 studies and publications on the therapeutic potential of H2, showing it to be beneficial for over 170 human disease models.

H2 Molecular Hydrogen is a Therapeutic Antioxidant

Antioxidants are vital to managing oxidative stress in our body. Oxidative stress comes about because of an imbalance of "free radicals" or "oxygen radicals" and antioxidants in our body.

Oxidative stress on cells1.jpg

How does oxidative stress affect the body?

Oxidative stress is an imbalance of free radical and antioxidants in the body, which can lead to cell and tissue damage. Oxidative stress can lead to inflammation which in turn may cause accelerated ageing, low energy, sleep challenges and many health conditions.

A large body of scientific evidence suggests that long term oxidative stress contributes to the development in a range of chronic conditions. Such conditions include cancer, diabetes and heart diseases. (reference www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/324863#free-radicals)

How oxidative stress comes about.jpg

How does oxidative stress comes about?

As part of the metabolic process, our body generates both free radicals and antioxidants. It should be noted that not all free radicals are bad or cytotoxic. Some free radicals are needed for physiological roles like signaling.

Production of free radical are also driven my factors such as diet, lifestyle, pollution, ozone, cigarette smoke, etc. When there is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants, oxidative stress will result.

Why Is H2 Molecular Hydrogen A Highly Effective Antioxidant?

H2 is a Selective Antioxidant

H2 selectively reduced the hydroxyl radical, the most cytotoxic of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and effectively protected cells; however, H2 did not react with other ROS, which possess physiological roles.  … Thus, H2 can be used as an effective antioxidant therapy; owing to its ability to rapidly diffuse across membranes, it can reach and react with cytotoxic ROS and thus protect against oxidative damage.

H2 is a highly Bioavailable Antioxidant

H2 size allows it to penetrate through cells immediately. Naturally in a gaseous state it floats through the body’s cells using rapid diffusion.  It functions as a special antioxidant that is not blocked by normal mechanisms that prevent other antioxidants from moving in our bodies freely. H2 gas is the littlest and lightest particle comprising of just 2 protons and 2 electrons. H2 weighs 88x less than Vitamin C (the most famous antioxidant) and 431x less as Coenzyme Q10 which is another prevalent cell reinforcement or antioxidant H2 is neutral and non-polar, enabling it to effortlessly go through the cell layers and subcellular compartments (mitochondria). Molecular H2 has the most noteworthy dispersion rate everything being equal enabling it to quickly pervade cells.

For antioxidant to be effective/valuable They must be able to touch cell areas that are being harmed by cytotoxic free radicals. Most free radicals are made inside the mitochondria which is difficult for usual antioxidants supplements to reach.

H2 does not produce harmful by product(s)

Hydroxyl radicals are very oxidants that can damage our cells. Hydrogen gas neutralize free radicals such as Hydroxyl radicals to form water which is discharged as urine and sweat. Water by product in cell also helps with cell hydration..
